Build your Summer Wardrobe: Part I

Oh snap!  Summer is right around the corner, and HCG is eager to begin adding to our closet accordingly.  In anticipation of our favorite season, we’ve created a new series dedicated to building a fabulous summer wardrobe.  Today, we launch this series with a post devoted to everyone’s favorite beach accessory: the summer hat!

My mind is still on vacation, and my recent trip helped me realize I need more summer hats.  Whether you’re lounging poolside in St. Tropez or relaxing on the beaches of Cape May, a kick ass summer hat is a critical component to staying cool and looking chic.  In our book, the bigger and more glamorous the hat, the better.

Good news: there are plenty of reasonably-priced summer hats on the market.  Last week, I happened upon this amazing floppy straw beach hat pictured above (from H&M) priced at just $9.95!  Keep in mind that this hat isn’t the most sturdy version I’ve encountered, but at $10, it’s worth adding to your collection.

The Packable Floppy Hat from Target was my first foray into glam summer hats, and it served me well for a few summers.  In addition to the Packable Floppy Hat, Target has a bunch of other good options that are sold out online but are available in stores.  I would try the Lare Straw Floppy Hat or the Straw Crown Floppy Hat.

Looking to spend $300 on a summer hat?  Look no further:

eugeniakimSummer hats don’t get much more perfect than this Eugenia Kim honey striped straw sunhat, and it would surely last more than one season ($280 at Net-a-Porter).  If you like this striped look but aren’t a fan of the price tag, you’re in luck: Goorin Brothers makes a nearly identical version for only $60 available on Zappos.

A word to the wise: always remember to try a hat on before deciding to purchase/keep it.    If you have any inclination that someone will confuse you with your grandmother in Florida, give it the boot.

More options:
Staring at Stars Short Brim Straw Floppy Hat, $28 at Urban Outfitters
Summer straw hat, $34 at J.Crew
Bop Basics Raffia Crochet Sunhat, $98 at Shopbop

Kara: Thank you! Team HCG uses a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. I must give credit to Joe who prompted me to “give him some different looks” for this photo.

SMR: You ARE awesome. 7 months until the best night of your life.
